Tooth Extractions

In some cases, it may be necessary to remove a tooth for your well-being. We strive to make the process of tooth extractions as simple as possible so that you can concentrate on a speedy recovery.

The Tooth Extraction Process

At Andrew Miller Family Dentistry, we prioritize helping you maintain all of your teeth. However, there are instances where tooth extraction is necessary for long-term oral health. Tooth extractions at Andrew Miller Family Dentistry are typically quick. The most crucial aspect of this process is the recovery. It’s important to control bleeding right after the tooth extraction to promote proper healing. We will ask you to bite down on a gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes after the extraction to form a blood clot. Refrain from disturbing the blood clot for the next 24 hours is essential. This means avoiding sucking through straws to prevent the development of a dry socket. We recommend using an ice pack on the outer cheek to reduce swelling. Once the swelling has gone down, a warm compress can be placed in the same area for comfort. Additionally, gently rinsing your mouth with salt water can help keep the extraction area clean.

  • How do I prevent dry socket after tooth extraction?

Here are some tips to help prevent dry socket after tooth extraction:

    1. Avoid using straws or anything that creates suction or a large air movement.
    2. Refrain from smoking, as the sucking motion and chemicals in tobacco can dislodge the blood clot and hinder healing.
    3. Stick to soft foods like applesauce, yogurt, and mashed potatoes for the first one or two days.
    4. Please consult your healthcare provider about your medications to ensure they won’t interfere with healing.
    5. Maintain good oral hygiene to keep your mouth clean, and consider using an antibacterial mouthwash.
    6. Follow your dentist’s instructions on oral care to promote a quicker recovery.
  • What can I eat after tooth extraction?

It’s important to stick to soft foods for the first couple of days following your tooth extraction. You don’t want to disturb the blood clot that has formed, so some foods you can eat are:

    • Applesauce
    • Yogurt
    • Mashed potatoes
    • Jello
    • Pudding
    • Ice cream
  • What causes the need for tooth extraction?

Tooth extraction removes a tooth from its socket in the bone. This procedure is often necessary when a tooth has been broken or damaged by decay to the extent that it cannot be repaired with a filling or crown.

Several other reasons for tooth extraction include extra teeth blocking others from growing in, baby teeth that have not fallen out in time for adult teeth to come in, the need for braces, the removal of wisdom teeth, and medical reasons.
