If you experience an aching jaw, pain or tenderness in the jaw joints, or pain when chewing, you may have a temporomandibular disorder (TMD), the most well-known form being Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ). The temporomandibular joint is the hinge that connects your jaw to your skull. It is located right beneath the ears on both sides of the face.
The exact cause of TMJ is often difficult to determine, which can be frustrating for both patients and healthcare providers. However, several factors can be considered. Common causes of TMJ include the erosion of the disk between the jaw bones, displacement of the disk, arthritis in the jaw joint, trauma, teeth grinding at night, high-stress levels, and possibly a genetic component.
At Andrew Miller Family Dentistry, we will discuss the various causes of TMJ with you and develop a personalized treatment plan.
